Syngnathus typhle

Pipefish ans seahorses, seadragons and and pipehorses, belong to the Syngnathidae family, which means 'fused jaw'. They are a kind of fish and belong to the same phylum as goldfish and herring. Here are a few of my favorites...



The Deep-snouted Pipefish can be found in the Baltic and Mediterranean. Both sub species vary from brown to green depending on the environment. This was done with a light watercolor wash and then details and shading built up with watercolor pencils.

Solenostomus paradoxus

Ornate Ghostpipefish are found in the Indo-West Pacific, including the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. They come in a wide variety of colors from black to bright reds and yellows of spots and bands. Can be often found near crinoids and gorgonian corals.

Siokunichthys nigrolineatus

The Mushroom-coral Pipefish live in groups among the tentacles of mushroom corals and can sometimes be mistaken for worms.

Doryrhamphus japonicus

Doryrhamphus japonicus, or Honshu Pipefish, are found in tidal pools and shallow waters off of subtropical Japan to northern Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This is a brooding male and accompanying female.
